Salinity Sensors, Meters and Measurements

Salinity is a critical issue which has ramifications for the environment and the economy. Over the years ICT International has been involved with a number of salinity related projects. The following are some examples.

In the lab, irrigation practices which lead to the accumulation of salts in the soil profile have been studied using soil columns. An example comes from scientists at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, who set up a series of soil columns and are using the data in various models. In the field, an excellent case study comes from Dubai where grass were irrigated with varying levels of saline water. This case study can be found here.

Another large scale field experiment examined how to phytoremediate land degraded by salinity. Known as the Kamarooka project, various trees with forestry potential were planted on saline soils where the groundwater had reached the surface. It was hypothesized that the trees could lower the saline groundwater thus ameliorating the land. The project has seen tremendous success and more information can be found here.
